Abstract

The increasing prevalence of smartphone use among Generation Z learners has significantly transformed educational environments worldwide. While mobile technologies provide unprecedented access to information, they have simultaneously contributed to reduced attention spans, increased distraction, and declining academic engagement. This article investigates pedagogical approaches that effectively foster intrinsic motivation among Generation Z students despite the challenges associated with digital dependency. Drawing upon Self-Determination Theory, cognitive neuroscience, and contemporary educational research, the study examines how autonomy, competence, emotional engagement, embodied learning, and identity-based instruction contribute to sustainable motivation. Through a qualitative analysis of current literature and classroom observations, the paper argues that traditional teacher-centered approaches are increasingly ineffective for digitally connected learners. The findings suggest that meaningful challenges, frequent experiences of success, emotional relevance, and strategic technology integration play a crucial role in promoting long-term academic engagement. The article concludes that educators should focus on designing psychologically meaningful learning experiences rather than relying solely on external rewards and disciplinary measures
