Abstract

We have grown accustomed to the existence of two Koreas: South and North. The prosperous South stands as one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world. Throughout its history, it endured several military dictatorships and the mass killing of protesters, yet it ultimately succeeded in building a free society. North Korea, by contrast, is today a brutal totalitarian state. Initially, it even surpassed the South in terms of living standards; however, as a result of misguided political decisions, it eventually fell far behind—a decline that culminated in a famine that struck the country in the 1990s. But how did it come to pass that a single people has remained divided for over 70 years? Why did Korea split so radically, and why have generations of Koreans grown up harboring hostility toward their neighbors? And could this war have been avoided?
